A study from the University of California-Riverside finds that families living near reservations with gaming have higher income levels.
According to UC Riverside's Center for California Native Nations, families within 10 miles of a casino saw their income rise 55 percent between 1990 and 2000. Families not living reservations saw their income rise just 33 percent.
Unemployment and the number of people on welfare also dropped near reservations with casinos, the study said.
the report "Lands of Opportunity: Social and Economic Effects of Tribal Gaming on Localities" is published in the September issue of Policy Matters.
