County approves $38M casino deal with Pala Band

San Diego County supervisors approved a $38 million agreement with the Pala Band of Mission Indians on Wednesday.

The agreement calls for the tribe to improve the highway leading to its casino. The tribe also agreed to pay for law enforcement, criminal prosecution and gambling-addiction treatment services.

The agreement was required by the tribe's 2004 compact with the state. The tribe plans to nearly double the size of the Pala Casino. The project will cost an estimated $100 million.

In related news, the casino's longtime managing, Jerry Turk, will leave the tribe in March 2008, when his contract expires.
