"Executives at Foxwoods Resort Casino know more housing is needed to accommodate the casino's growing workforce. That point became clear in a meeting last week between casino executive's and The Day editorial board.
More importantly, it appears the casino owners, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, is exploring ways to do something about it.
Local officials have been quietly critical of the tribe's silence on the essential issue of housing. Foxwoods is undergoing an expansion that will require adding 2,000 more workers to the roughly 10,000-employee workforce. That has raised the question: Where will they all live?
Studies have documented a significant housing shortage in the region, particularly in the rental market. The affordable-housing problem is especially acute. If the new workers cannot afford to live here, they will be traveling greater distances, taking their paychecks out of the region, adding to congested roads and burning unnecessary gas."
