Town to vote on Mashpee Wampanoag casino deal

Voters in the town of Middleboro, Massachusetts, are set vote July 23 on a casino agreement with the Mashpee Wampanaog Tribe.

The tribe owns 125 acres in the town and is negotiating to buy up to 500 more acres. The land would be used for a major resort casino and for a buffer zone, a spokesperson said.

The tribe offered $7 million a year plus $150 million in infrastructure improvements. The town has responded by asking for $250 million in improvements and 1 to 2 percent of slot machine revenues.

The tribe and the town are still negotiating. A final deal should be ready for voters later this month.
