Leaders in the city of New Bedford hope to convince the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to host a casino there.
The tribe has expressed interest in New Bedford but is further along in discussions with the town of Middleboro. With Middleboroofficials seeking more up-front infrastructure payments, New Bedford says it can better accommodate the tribe.
The tribe proposed $7 million a year and $150 million in infrastructure payments to Middleboro. Town leaders are asking for $250 million up front plus 1 to 2 percent of slot machine revenues.
