The United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America has started a union organizing petition at the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation's casino in Connecticut.
The UAW hopes to gather enough signatures to force a unionizing vote. "This is a positive change that's positive for everyone, " an interested poker dealer told The Hartford Courant.
Tribes have been able to resist unions but the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals earlier this year ruled that federal labor law applies to tribal businesses that employ or impact non-Indians. The case could be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
