An agreement for an off-reservation casino in California has been extended.
The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians and the Big Lagoon Rancheria want to open side-by-side casinos in Barstow. The site is located along a major interstate, about halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
The tribes signed compacts with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) for the casinos. The agreements would have expired Thursday without further extension.
Despite the governor's support, lawmakers haven't approved the compacts due to objections from gaming tribes to "reservation shopping." The Los Coyotes Band and Big Lagoon are based hundreds of miles from Barstow.
