Residents of DeKalb County, Illinois, still don't know if the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas will be able to build a casino in their backyard.
At a town hall meeting on Tuesday, residents asked many questions about the legal status of a 128-acre farm the tribe purchased. The tribe wants to build a Class II facility at the site.
The National Indian Gaming Commission sent acting general counsel Penny Coleman to the meeting. She said the Interior Department still has to determine whether the land can be used for a casino.
The land is within a 1,280-acre reservation that the tribe says is still in existence.
