Two California tribes want lawmakers to consider their compacts for an off-reservation casino in Barstow.

The Big Lagoon Rancheria and the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians have proposed side-by-side casinos in Barstow. Both tribes are based hundreds and hundreds of miles away.

The tribes signed compacts with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) but ran into opposition from other tribes, including some who also negotiated new agreements with the state. Those tribes are now seeking approval from state lawmakers.

The Big Lagoon Rancheria and the Los Coyotes Band say the new deals should lay to rest any controversy over their casinos. They accuse the other tribes, who already operate successful casinos, of trying to hinder competition.
