The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is asserting its right to operate Class II games without state approval.
The tribe, whose recognition is being finalized, is actively looking for land to open a casino. But Class III gaming is not legal in the state and the tribe would have to negotiate a compact before operating slot machines, card games and related games.
The tribe, however, could still offer bingo, pull tabs and electronic Class II machines. But a spokesperson said that's not in the plans for now.
