A federal judge has refused to approve agreements the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma signed with communities in Ohio.
Judge James G. Carr said the agreements give the appearance that the tribe is settling its land claim for gaming rights. He said he wouldn't take any action that could pave the way for casinos.
The tribe filed a claim to 146 square miles in western Ohio. The tribe is hoping to take advantage of a provision in the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act that allows casinos in exchange for land claim settlements.
As part of its strategy, the tribe signed agreements with a handful of communities for casinos.
