The Legislature’s Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee voted 12-1 on Wednesday to back a racino proposed by the Passamaquoddy Tribe.
The tribe wants to build a racetrack with slot machines in Washington County. State voters previously authorized slot machines at a non-Indian facility.
During debate on the bill, Rep. Gary Moore, a Republican, said he has heard fellow lawmakers make racist comments about the tribe. He said Indians have been called "welfare warriors" and "drunks and addicts" who are "lazy and want a free ride."
