The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts will meet with the city of New Bedford to discuss potential sites for a casino.
With federal recognition in hand, the tribe is actively looking for places to build a casino. At least two communities, including New Bedford and Middleboro, have welcomed the idea.
As newly recognized, the tribe would qualify for an exception in Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
The tribe could create an initial reservation and build a casino there.
Currently, Class III games is not legal in the state although lawmakers are considering proposals to authorize slot machines. The tribe would need a compact to operate casino-style games.
