The Catawba Nation plans to appeal a South Carolina Supreme Court decision that blocks the tribe from offering poker on the reservation.
The tribe sought to operate poker under the terms of its 1993 settlement act. But in a unanimous decision, the court said the act requires the tribe to abide by the state's video gaming ban [Catawba Nation v. South Carolina].
The tribe will ask the court to reconsider the opinion. But a lawyer said the dispute will probably end up before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Under its settlement act, the tribe operates two bingo halls off the reservation. The tribe agreed to be excluded from the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
