Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) met with lawmakers to discuss the legalization of gaming in the state.
Patrick said he is "closer" to making a decision but warned reporters that one wasn't coming soon. He has set up a task force to make recommendations about gaming issues.
If any type of gaming is legalized, the newly recognized Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe would be able to offer similar games. Both tribes need land to open casinos and a gaming compact.
One lawmaker said Patrick discussed gaming by both tribes, who are actively seeking casinos. The Mashpee would qualify for a newly recognized tribe exception under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The Aquinnah would appear to have to follow the two-part determination process, since the tribe already has an established reservation on the island of Martha's Vineyard.
