New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) has approved an off-reservation casino for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe.
Spitzer and the tribe signed a deal today for the $500 million casino in the Catskills. It requires the tribe to share revenues and to comply with state tax, labor and health laws.
The Interior Department was waiting on the state's answer before moving ahead with the tribe's land-into-trust application. Spitzer said he would work to secure the acquisition.
The casino site is in the Catskills, more than 400 miles from the tribe's reservation and about 90 minutes north of New York City.
