The United Keetoowah Band of Oklahoma says 71 percent of residents in Fort Smith, Arkansas, support a casino in their city.
The tribe has asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place land in trust for a casino. The application was filed last spring amid legislative attempts to curb off-reservation gaming.
The tribe operates a casino in Oklahoma, but its legal status has been questioned by the state. The Cherokee Nation says it must approve all trust land acquisitions within its 14-county area that includes the UKB site.
