The
Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indianswants Jackson County to hold a non-binding referendum on an off-reservation casino but officials aren't sure how to move forward with the process.
The tribe plans to open a casino in Ocean Springs, more than 200 miles from the reservation. Chief Phillip Martin has asked for a vote to be held in 2008.
But some county supervisors aren't sure of the legality of a non-binding referendum. One supervisor wants the county to seek an opinion from the state attorney general before proceeding.
There is some precedent. In 2001, Tishomingo County held a non-binding vote on a casino sought by the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians.
