First Nations casino hit for laying off non-Natives

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority has been ordered to pay more than $72,000 to four non-Natives who were fired from a First Nations casino.

SIGA laid off the four pit bosses at the Northern Lights Casino in 2002. Three of them were non-Native while the fourth was Metis, CBC News reported. A casino manager testified that SIGA was trying to ensure 80 percent of the workers were enrolled with a First Nations.

A human rights tribunal said the firings were discriminatory and ordered SIGA to compensate the four for lost wages and hurt feelings.
