The Menominee Nation's proposal for an off-reservation casino in Kenosha, Wisconsin, has been approved by the Midwest regional office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The tribe is proposing to turn an old dog track into an $800 million casino. The plan now goes for final review by officials in Washington, D.C. Under the two-part determination process of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the state governor must also approve.
Other tribes in the state oppose the project. The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, which operates an off-reservation casino in Milwaukee, says the casino would hurt its business.
