Recently inaugurated New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) is being urged to approve an off-reservation casino for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs gave its approval for the tribe to build a casino in the Catskills. Now it's up to Spitzer to decide whether to allow it.
Catskills officials support the casino, which they believe will revitalize the economy. State law provides for up to three casinos in the region.
The Mohawks are the first tribe to receive BIA approval in the Catskills.
