Eastern Cherokee per capita payouts up 12 percent

Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina saw a 12 percent increase in their per capita payments.

Every member of the tribe received $4,699 in casino profits on December 1. For 13,500 people, that amounts to $63.4 million in payments.

The first casino payment, in 1995, was for $575. The Harrah’s Cherokee Casino makes an estimated $155 million in profits a year, half of which goes to tribal members.
