The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is in federal court to block a tax on its slot machines.
The tribe leases the machines from a third party. The town of Ledyard has imposed a property tax on the machines.
The tribe says the tax is illegal without Congressional authorization. But the town says it can collect taxes from private vendors who do business on the reservation.
The tribe filed a lawsuit in federal court on August 3. Initially, the Atlantic City Coin and Slot Service Co. was a co-plaintiff, but the judge approved the tribe's request to drop the vendor, a move that the tribe says will strengthen its case.
