The off-reservation casino sought by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians is being called a threat to the Gulf Coast economy.
The tribe's proposal prompted Harrah's Entertainment to put off plans for expansion in Biloxi. The company cited uncertainty regarding the off-reservation casino, which would not be subject to state taxes.
"If this is not resolved now -- I mean immediately -- then it will definitely threaten the recovery of the Gulf Coast economy," casino lawyer Dan McDaniel told The Biloxi Sun-Herald.
The tribe asked Jackson County to schedule a non-binding referendum in 2008. Opponents want to call a vote earlier.
