DOI proposes Class III rules for Seminole Tribe

The Interior Department plans to issue rules that would allow the Seminole Tribe of Florida to offer slot machines because negotiations with Gov. Jeb Bush (R) have failed.

A September 26 letter urged the tribe to strike a deal with Bush. But if that doesn't happen within 60 days, the department says it will issue the Class III procedures.

The rules would allow 24-hour use of slot machines, which were legalized by voters. The tribe would not be required to share revenues with the state, or make any other concessions to the state.

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act authorizes Interior to step in when negotiations with a state have failed.
