Passamaquoddy Tribe pushes for slot referendum

The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine wants the state to certify a ballot referendum for a tribal-owned racino.

The tribe submitted over 60,000 signatures to the state. But Rep. Donald Soctomah, the tribe's state representative, says it's taking too long to verify whether the signatures are valid.

The Secretary of State says the upcoming election has kept the office busy. A spokesperson said the certification work will be done by January.

The tribe wants to build race track with up to 1,500 slot machines. Voters have approved similar facilities for non-Indian developers.
