Internet gaming ban inserted into defense bill

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tennessee) has inserted provisions to ban Internet gaming into the defense authorization bill, The Hill newspaper reports.

The specific language wasn't available to the paper but, as introduced, the Goodlatte-Leach Internet Gambling Prohibition Act would ban the use of the Internet to conduct wages. As introduced, it provides exceptions for inter-tribal gaming.

The "must pass" defense bill may be held up, however, by House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois). He wants to insert provisions related to immigration and court security.

The Internet gaming bill was defeated in 2000. Some advocates blame convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, whose tribal and non-tribal clients opposed the bill, for its defeat.
