Editorial: Tribes right to question NIGC rules

"A proposal by the National Indian Gaming Commission to limit certain forms of Indian casino gambling has many tribes suspicious and upset — and rightly so.

Regulations are needed for the entire industry. But it appears the gaming commission is trying to rewrite Indian gaming, with rules that will hurt their gaming entities.

Naturally, some say Indian gaming doesn’t face restrictions and tribes have been free to do what they want, but where’s the dialogue with other gambling interests that ensures everyone’s interest and creates a fair playing field for the traditional Las Vegas-type gambling enterprises, lotteries and Internet and Indian gaming.

Indian tribes are raising questions of fairness, and it seems they are correct. As we have said before, federal and state governments and all the gambling interests need to come together to decide what will and will not be allowed. "
