Schwarzenegger offres to renegotiate compacts

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) addressed the California Nations Indian Gaming Association last week.

Schwarzenegger said he was open to renegotiating compacts with CNIGA members. CNIGA, the state's largest inter-tribal organization, resisted new deals that a handful of tribes signed.

The CNIGA tribes say the new deals give up too much sovereignty to the state. They lobbied against some of the compacts that Schwarzenegger signed.

Schwarzenegger has been reaching out to tribes in recent weeks. During his election campaign, he angered tribes for accusing them of not paying their "fair share" to the state. He later accused them of "ripping off" the state.
