Rhode Island court refuses gaming challenge

The Rhode Island Supreme Court on Thursday refused a request by Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) to rule on the constitutionality of the Narragansett Tribe's proposed casino.

Carcieri has raised four legal challenges to the constitutional amendment being put before voters on November 7. But the court said it wouldn't get involved.

Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas hailed the decision as a victory. The tribe is partnering with Harrah's Entertainment to open the casino.

But opponents are considering other ways to challenge the plan before it gets to voters. Lawsuit are also likely if the amendment is approved.
