New York lawmakers kill Catskills casino bill

A bill to settle the land claims of two Wisconsin tribes and grant them casinos in the Catskills was killed by New York lawmakers this week.

The bill would have helped the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans. Both tribes want to open casinos in the Catskills, about 90 minutes north of New York City.

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe opposed the measure, arguing that the Wisconsin tribes don't have any rights in New York. The Mohawks are also seeking a casino in the Catskills.
