Two Democratic candidates for New York governor debated the legality of the Oneida Nation's casino, with one saying the facility should be shut down immediately.
Thomas Suozzi said his rival, state attorney general Eliot Spitzer, needs to go after the tribe.
The Turning Stone Resort and Casino is operating on land that is within the boundaries of the historic Oneida Reservation but is not held in trust.
Spitzer has said going after the casino is not wise because the tribe employs thousands of people. Suozzi called Spitzer's stance "hypocritical" because he said the attorney general's actions in other cases threatened jobs.
