Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) was in Arkansas on Monday to campaign for Republican gubernatorial candidate Asa Hutchinson, who opposes off-reservation gaming.
McCain said tribes should only be able to open casinos on existing reservations or on land contiguous to existing reservations, The Arkansas News Bureau reported.
He is sponsoring a bill to block certain off-reservation gaming proposals and restrict other types of casino projects.
The issue is being raised in Arkansas because the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians from Oklahoma filed an application for a casino in Fort Smith. Hutchinson opposes the proposal.
