A ballot referendum is headed for the ballot in Barstow, California, now that a judge dismissed a challenge to the initiative.
The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians and the Big Lagoon Rancheria, along with their gaming developer, challenged the wording of the referendum. They said it would give preference to the Chemehuevi Tribe, another tribe seeking a casino in Barstow.
The Los Coyotes Band and the Big Lagoon Rancheria are located hundreds of miles away from Barstow. The Chemehuevi Tribe is closer and claims ancestral ties to the area.
Barstow is located along a major interstate in between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
