The city of Yorktown, Saskatchewan, is seeking to negotiate a deal with the
Sakimay First Nation after a motion to go to court and try to enforce a smoking ban on the
Painted Hand Casino failed.
The city and the province have passed laws to outlaw smoking in public places. But since the casino is under First Nation jurisdiction, the Canadian government has said the laws have no force.
Some non-Indian businesses claim they will lose money if smokers go to the casino to light up.
