Catawba Nation gaming bill introduced

A bill was introduced in the South Carolina Senate on Wednesday that would resolve a gaming dispute with the Catawba Nation in the tribe's favor.

The tribe won a major court victory in December 2005. A judge ruled that the tribe can offer video poker even though the game has been outlawed in the rest of the state.

The tribe intends to revive its video poker operation but tribal leaders would rather open a new high-stakes bingo hall off the reservation. The bill that was just introduced authorizes the bingo facility so long as the tribe drops its video poker plans.
