Agua Caliente Band asked to delay casino project

The city of Rancho Mirage, California, made an eleventh-hour request for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians to delay a casino expansion project. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is also seeking a delay.

The tribe had already delayed a vote on whether to add a hotel and expand the gaming space at the Agua Caliente Casino. Comments were being accepted until Friday on the proposal but the city and the Schwarzenegger administration say more time is needed.

The tribe has agreed to make payments and collect certain taxes as part of the expansion. But city officials are making "surprisingly bold" demands, a tribal consultant said.
