Passamaquoddy Tribe seeks quick route to gaming

The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine is making a "peace" offering to state lawmakers in hopes of getting approval to open a race track with slot machines.

Last week, the tribe turned in 61,000 signatures, more than enough to put the racino on the ballot in June or in November. But under state law, lawmakers can go ahead and enact the proposal.

Passamaquoddy tribal Rep. Fred Moore says the tribe wants to avoid creating political problems if the racino is placed on the ballot. Democrats are worried a November vote could hurt Gov. John Baldacci (D), who opposes the racino, while Republicans say a June vote could help some of their candidates, who support the racino.
