The Bureau of Indian Affairs is proposing to acquire 228 acres in trust for the Ione Band of Miwok Indians in northern California.
The tribe intends to use the land for a casino. The BIA is asking local officials to comment on the project [Notice of Gaming Land Acquisition Application].
The land is located in and around the city of Plymouth. Local officials have raised concerns about the project and about the tribe's status.
The Interior Department has concluded that the tribe qualifies for an exception under Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The tribe is considered to be "restored."
