The Interior Department has delayed the acquisition of land for the Gun Lake Tribe of Michigan due to an anti-gaming lawsuit.
Interior planned to take 146 acres in trust on January 5, 2007. But the lawsuit from Michigan Gambling Opposition has pushed the date back to March 5. A court hearing today will consider motions to dismiss the case.
The tribe plans to use the land for a casino. As a newly recognized tribe, the tribe qualifies for an exception under Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
