Opponents of an off-reservation casino presented more than 4,200 signatures to the city council in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on Monday but didn't get the reception they expected.
Jerry Hjelden, the head of the Grand Forks Petition Committee, was surprised there was no discussion about the opposition to the casino proposed by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. He wants the council to withdraw its preliminary talks with the tribe.
The tribe is seeking the first non-reservation casino in the state. Other North Dakota tribes are opposed to the idea.
