The Chickasaw Nation never hired Jack Abramoff but the Oklahoma tribe is taking on one of his causes by opposing gaming in Texas.
The Chickasaws fear gaming in the Lone Star state will hurt their gaming empire. "They oppose gaming in Texas because it's a market share issue to them," one of the tribe's Texas lobbyists told WFAA-TV.
Two of Abramoff's clients fought gaming in Texas as well. The Coushattas of Louisiana and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians made contributions to a non-profit group that passed the money onto Christian activist Ralph Reed. He used it to mobilize religious opposition to gaming in Texas.
With Abramoff now out of the picture, the Chickasaws have hired three lobbyists to stop the expansion of gaming in Texas. The tribe has spent $120,000, WFAA-TV reported.
