Fourteen tribes have submitted off-reservation gaming applications in order to beat an April 15 cut-off date in pending legislation, the Associated Press reports.
Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), the chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, imposed the cut-off in his amendments to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. But he warned that he would move the date back to March 29 if he saw a "flood" of applications.
Whether 14 is considered a "flood" is not known. McCain's office did not respond to the AP's request for comment on Thursday.
The AP says it obtained a list of all pending that indicated 14 of about 40 applications were filed between March 29 and April 15.
