The Wisconsin Senate passed a bill on Thursday that requires legislative approval for off-reservation casinos.
Currently, the governor has the power to approve off-reservation casinos. The bill adds another layer to the process that at least three tribes in the state -- the Menominee Nation and the Lac Du Flambeau Chippewa and the Bad River Chippewa -- are going through.
For these types of land acquisitions, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act requires the state governor's concurrence. Each state can set its own policies.
