The Manzanita Band of Kumeyaay Indians has secured an option for an off-reservation casino near the U.S.-Mexico border.
The tribe, with the help of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, plans to build the casino on 60 acres in Calexico. The site is four miles north of Mexicali, a large border city in Mexico.
The Manzanita Band submitted a land-into-trust application last month, ahead of a potential deadline in legislation pending in the Senate that would eliminate such casino proposals in the future.
