Indian gaming has been good to the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut.
The tribe was recognized through the federal recognition process in 1994. Soon after, the tribe opened the Mohegan Sun Casino, a facility that brings in more than $1.2 billion a year.
The money has enabled the tribe to provide education, housing and other services. Every adult member receives a per capita of about $28,000 a year, with minors seeing their money placed in a trust.
The tribe is now moving forward with gaming ventures in other states. The tribe is financing the Cowlitz Tribe in Washington, the Menominee Nation in Wisconsin and plans on opening a slot machine facility in Pennsylvania.
