In compact negotiations with the state of Montana, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes is seeking more control over gaming that occurs on the Flathead Reservation.
The tribe only has authority over tribal facilities. But non-Indians operate gaming facilities on the reservation that the tribe wants to regulate. According to the National Indian Gaming Commission, all lands within a reservation -- regardless of trust or fee status -- qualify for gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
In addition to regulation of all gaming, the tribe wants to add more gaming machines and increase the maximum bet.
The tribe's current compact expires at the end of the year.
