A Senate subcommittee in South Carolina voted 3-2 in favor of a bill to authorize high-stakes bingo for the Catawba Nation.
Under the tribe's 1993 settlement act, all gaming must go through the state. But a judge recently ruled that the tribe can offer video poker on the reservation even though the game has been outlawed by the state constitution.
Rather than return to video poker, the tribe hopes to convince lawmakers to authorize a new bingo hall off the reservation. The tribe's existing bingo operation has seen a decline in revenues since the creation of the state lottery.
