"A world-class casino in Galena, Kan., remains a strong blip on the state’s radar screen. Whether it will be a tribal enterprise or a private one will depend on whether and how legislators respond to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ plan to expand gambling to meet the state’s increasing budget pressures, especially for education.
If the tribal casino is authorized, the Kickapoo Tribe, Sac and Fox Nation and Prairie Band Pottawatomi Nation are planning to build a casino and hotel south of Galena and east of Baxter Springs. Of course, the state may decide to build its own based on the results of a study two years ago that identified Galena as the site with the greatest potential return for a state-owned casino."
