The former tribal police chief for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe is now the top gaming regulator for the state of Minnesota.
Steven Day, 49, a Leech Lake tribal member, took control of the alcohol and gambling enforcement division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety this week, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. He will oversee a staff of 25 and a budget of $2.5 million.
A Republican state lawmaker questioned whether Day's tribal background would affect his oversight of tribal casinos. Bill Lawrence, editor of the Native American Press/Ojibwe News, said Day might not have the experience needed for the job.
